Director, Investment Funds

On the IMR team, Scott Crandon is known as ‘the analytics guy.’ He continuously strives to create a balance between performance and risk. Scott leads a team of asset class specialists who review funds and propose updates for all fund line-ups across our individual and group business. The team helps identify and manage risk, like over-concentration by manager type, geography or market exposures.

“I want to ensure that an investment manager is a consistent top performer, but that we’ve also put controls in place to manage risk,” he says.

Scott’s role includes in-depth research into our current investment managers. When it comes to building a new fund line-up, he considers what types of mandates and managers to look for and what unique features could set us apart from the competition.

Since joining the IMR team in 2008, Scott has seen a shift in the way investment funds and managers are selected. Previously, as a result of company amalgamation, line-ups were largely inherited and defined based on distribution channels. Today there’s a quantifiable framework in place and a philosophy that fuels how the team builds and defines fund lineups.

Metrics are useful, but Scott’s measure of success can be attributed to the special moment when advisors are excited to sell the funds and bring more value to their clients.
